This summer, Strand Theatre in Oak Bluffs is quickly becoming known as the cultural heartbeat of Martha’s Vineyard thanks to a delightful and diverse lineup of events.
From captivating live performances and indie film screenings to community theater productions and special guest appearances, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
First up in July is the ever-popular Vineyard Sound at 2 pm on July 6. Vineyard Sound is an all-male a cappella group based on Marthas Vineyard. Founded in 1992, the group is known for its vibrant performances, showcasing a wide range of musical genres including pop, rock, jazz, and traditional barbershop harmonies.
Each summer, Vineyard Sound brings together talented collegiate singers from across the
country to perform throughout the island, delighting both locals and tourists with their vocal prowess and engaging stage presence. Their performances have become a cherished summer tradition on Marthas Vineyard, drawing enthusiastic audiences year after year. Admission to this event is free, but donations are welcomed and very much appreciated.
On July 9 starting at 9 pm, Stand Theatre will feature Moms Unhinged, a standup comedy event featuring Catherine Shea, Janae Burris, and Andrea Marie. Known for her sharp wit, engaging storytelling, and relatable humor, Catherine Shea has performed at various comedy clubs and festivals, gaining a reputation for her unique comedic style and ability to connect with audiences. Her comedy often draws from personal experiences
and observations, making her performances both hilarious and authentic.
Shea’s rise in the comedy scene has been marked by a growing fan base and positive critic
reviews. Based in Denver, Colorado, Janae Burris is a comedian, actress, and writer. She has made a name for herself in the comedy scene with her sharp, insightful humor and dynamic stage presence. Burris has performed at numerous comedy festivals, including the High Plains Comedy Festivaland the Limestone Comedy Festival, and she has opened for well-known comedians such as Michael Che and Roy Wood Jr.
In addition to her stand-up career, Burris has also been involved in theater and film, showcasing her versatility as a performer. She was a member of the comedy group Pussy Bros and has been featured on platforms like Comedy Central and NPR. Her comedy often touches on themes of race, gender, and social issues, delivered with a relatable and engaging style.
Andrea Marie is an up-and-coming comedian known for her witty and relatable humor. Based in Denver, Colorado, she has been making waves in the local comedy scene with her sharp observations and engaging storytelling. Maries comedy often explores themes of everyday life, relationships, and personal experiences, resonating with a diverse audience.
She has performed at various comedy venues and festivals, gradually building a name for
herself as a talented and promising comedian. Her dynamic stage presence and ability to
connect with her audience make her performances memorable and enjoyable.
