Clouded with a tint of homesickness, I found myself standing at the register of Edgartown Meat and Fish examining the breakfast menu. Within a matter of three seconds, my decision was made clear when I spotted “bagel with lox, tomato, onion and capers.” Funny how the succulent taste of smoked salmon overcomes me with comfort, filling the void in my stomach with relief. As a half Jewish girl growing up in Brookline, MA, smoked salmon has played a prominent role in my breakfast routine. Yes, there is always that brief contemplation where one must acknowledge that they will “splurge” when purchasing lox, but that first bite always makes it worth it. After one hefty gulp of french roast coffee, I unwrapped my sesame seed bagel, unveiling a rather large compilation of veggies, meat and dairy. Hoisting the bagel into the air with both hands, I doubted my ability to take one smooth bite without the masterpiece crumbling into bits and pieces. To my surprise, my initial dent into my massive bagel was successful. A smile of satisfaction was painted across my face as the juicy jalepeno peppers – embedded within the cream cheese – burst in my mouth. The sizzling remnants of pepper lead my mouth to salivate, signaling I was in need of some juice from a tomato. The refreshing blend of spicy cheese, ripe tomato and thick salmon was the perfect start to a summer day on The Vineyard.
