A Vibrant Dance Festival At Union Chapel

by Diane Alter

THE BELOVED BUILT ON STILTS dance festival returns to Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs for its 28th year, offering six nights of diverse and dynamic performances from August 8-10 and 17-19,19.

Celebrating the island’s artistic spirit since 1997, this community-driven event features a mix of professional and amateur dancers from the Vineyard and beyond.  With free admission, no reservations required, and a lively drum circle kicking off each evening at 7:30 pm, Built on Stilts invites everyone to experience the shared language of dance in a welcoming and inspiring setting.

Built on Stilts exemplifies the shared language of dance through a beautifully egalitarian and inspiring festival that spans six nights. Each evening, the doors open at 7:30 pm with a drum circle and dancers’ warm-up, setting an energetic tone for the night. Dance shows start promptly at 8 pm, lasting approximately one hour without intermission. This year’s festival showcases an amalgam of performers, including professionals, amateurs, and dancers of all ages, reflecting the island’s remarkable artistic spirit.

What began in 1997 as a one-night concert featuring the work of seven choreographers has since grown into an island institution, known for its inclusive philosophy and wide range of choreographic sophistication and technical ability.

Built on Stilts, it has become a creative haven where professional participants are free to experiment, and fledgling performers can discover the joy of dance-making. The festival’s program varies each night, ensuring something for every taste. Audiences can expect a captivating mix of styles and performances that highlight the vibrant dance community of Martha’s Vineyard and beyond.

The festival’s all-inclusive approach has attracted diverse talent, making Built on Stilts a unique celebration of collective energy and creative output. Donations at the door are strongly encouraged to support the festival’s continued success and its mission to provide a platform for artists of all backgrounds.

Supported in part by the Martha’s Vineyard Cultural Council and the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Built on Stilts has also received funding from the Permanent Endowment for Martha’s Vineyard. This financial backing, combined with the community’s enthusiastic participation, ensures the festival’s longevity and its role in enriching the island’s cultural landscape.
