Lace Up the Hiking Shoes and Take a Walk Through Martha’s Vineyard History

by Diane Alter

Your one-of-a-kind adventure on Martha’s Vineyard starts the moment you step off the ferry or land at the island’s airport.

Whether you come for the bonanza of beautiful beaches, or a shopping spree at any one of the island’s fashion forward stores, or to taste some of the isle’s undeniably delightful delicacies, make sure you delve into MV’s storied past.

Indeed, the island oozes with history. And there is no better way to experience MV’s iconic past than on foot.

A walk through Waskosim’s Rock offers a serene stroll through Vineyard history. Located off North Road just west of the West Tisbury/Chilmark line, Waskosim’s Rock Reservation features 185 amazing acres, scenic trails and a glimpse into the island’s storied past.

Here you will stumble upon ancient stonewalls and striking views of Fisher Pond. Follow a verdant trail to reach Waskosim’s Rock, a historical marker for the “middle line” separating the Native American Wampanoag land from that of the settlers.

The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head is a sovereign tribal nation located in Aquinnah. The Aquinnah Wampanoag have resolutely endured time and circumstance. The tribe is the only federally recognized tribe within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Waskosim’s Rock is unnervingly balanced atop the reserve’s ridges. Its shape and location have long figured in Wampanoag and MV history. The reservation is exceptional for horseback riding, mountain biking, picnicking, nature study, and of course, hiking.
