From the moment you walk in the door, it is easy to recognize that there is something special about Edgartown Meat and Fish Market. People walk around holding a Starbucks cup, an unusual sight on the island. The market started serving the iconic coffee brand about five and a half years ago.
“We wanted something that would go well with our freshly-made bagels,” said manager Penny. “People like Starbucks. The coffee giant is known for good customer service, which is something we value here. We are the only place on the island that makes our own bagels instead of having them shipped from off island or stored frozen.”
As the only place on the Vineyard to serve the famous brand, the Market has some bragging rights and clout. But the coveted coffee is not what makes the Market one-of-a-kind.
This is not your usual grocery store. The bakery, deli counter, produce section and wine aisle have a gourmet market vibe. The products are arranged in such a way that makes the shop feel cozy and welcoming. Sunlight shines in through large windows and no one carries big shopping carts or fights over weekly specials. It’s an upscale market with upscale service.
Pacing through the store trying to get a sense of the place, I notice no one is doing the same. Manager Samuel Shattuck explains the main focus of Edgartown Meat and Fish is to make people’s life easier, so they can enjoy their summer instead of getting stuck in never ending lines.
“We try to do all the work for you,” Sam said. “We do a lot of pre-seasoned stuff and a lot of stuff you just take home and grill so you can focus on enjoying your parties and de-stress on your holiday trip.”
That “stuff” includes a lot of meat, fish, and seafood, as well as different salads. This season, the market is featuring Salmon Burgers, Tuna Burgers and Fresh Maine Lobster for lobster rolls and lobster salads. The pre-made perfectly seasoned 100% Angus beef burgers, including the “Sweet Onion” and the “Cheddar Bacon,” are generously sized and grill ready. If you are looking for a meal that will not take long to prepare, this is the place.
If you are looking for great coffee, this is your place. If you are looking for delicious baked goods, this is your place. Oh, and if you fancy a bit of Japanese cuisine, this is also your place. Edgartown Meat and Fish has a fresh sushi bar, too. But we are saving that for another article. Stay tuned.
