Ululate: to howell and lament loudly, according to the Webster Dictionary. That is pretty much what one can expect from a Ululators concert—and, if you are on the Vineyard on July 29, you will be able to catch the band in action. Reunited after 25 years, the group will be performing alongside the Stephen Hart Band at the Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs.
Formed in 1989, the group—which features Paul Thurlow on guitar and keys, Stephen Hart on drums, Jimmy Parr on Bass, Sam Holmstock on congas, percussion and trombone, and Rick Bauseman on steel pan, guitar, timbales and percussion—gained recognition in New England before parting ways. Fast-forward 25 years and drummer Stephen Hart invited a few of his old band mates do play his solo debut album. The arrangement was so fun that Hart decided it would be a good idea do reunite a few members of the group for a release show. The invitation was so thrilling that every single member decided to participate. So here they are, practicing for the big day!
Certainly, fans still remember the band’s performances from back in the day and how the Ululators melting pot of styles is hard to explain in genres, since they mix everything from reggae to ska to soul to celtic music. However, the newbies should expect a good vibration for the mind, body, and spirit according to Stephen Hart.
“The Ululators will hit the stage with a high energy show from start to finish with a multitude of drumming and percussion. Think Carlos Santana meets Bob Marley meets Third World” Hart adds.
The concert happens on July 29 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Union Chapel (55 Narragansett Ave, Oak Bluffs). Tickets cost $25 dollars and can be purchased at Alleys, Third World, online or at the door.
