David Bromberg will rock the house on July 9 with an eclectic mix of blues, jazz, country, and rock and roll.

“I don’t have a set planned when I get on stage. I pretty much sing and play whatever I want.”

The Martha’s Vineyard Concert Series kicks-off on July 9 with The David Bromberg Quintet. Guests are guaranteed an unforgettable performance.

To be sure, David Bromberg takes the word multi-talented to the extreme.

An accomplished multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter, Bromberg is an artist in every sense of the word. Known for his quirky, humorous, and honest lyrics, Bromberg can play rhythm while simultaneously blasting out tunes as lead guitarist. He is perhaps best known for his “fingerpicking” style learned from blues and gospel great, the Reverend Gary Davis.

Bromberg has shared the stage with a plethora of legendary musicians, including Willie Nelson, Jerry Garcia, and Bob Dylan. He co-work the song “The Holdup” with Beatle icon George Harrison, who played on Bromberg’s self-titled 1972 album.

Bromberg’s 2007 album Try Me One More Time was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Traditional Folk Album. His most recent album, The Blues, The Whole Blues, and Nothing But the Blues, has drawn critical acclaim. Keeping the momentum going, Bromberg is at work on his next release.

For his July 9 MV Concert Series performance, Bromberg said he hopes guests leave feeling that not only have they enjoyed themselves, but also that they have felt emotions.

“I sing songs that speak to me,” Bromberg told This Week on MV. “I don’t insist on only singing songs I write. I hunt through old records and tapes for inspiration. It’s a musical and emotional journey.”

The same could be said about Bromberg’s performances. His shows run the gamut from blues to jazz to country to rock and roll. Every performance is a melodious rollercoaster leaving audiences saying what a ride.

“It varies every time,” Bromberg said. “It depends on the night, the audience, and how I fell. I pretty much sing and play whatever I want.”

Whatever Bromberg sings and plays is unarguably memorable. With his songs you don’t just sit there; you take part. His songs all seem to end with an exclamation point. And while Bromberg’s lyrics are not notably dramatic, his songs, nonetheless, are poignant.

The July 9 performance for the Martha’s Vineyard concert series is part of Bromberg’s busy summer tour. A frequent visitor to the island, Bromberg is looking forward to some seasonal clams. “They are the best in the world.”
