Through equestrian therapy, Rising Tide offers unique development opportunities to both children and adults

Rising Tide, a therapeutic equestrian center located on the Edgartown/West Tisbury road, is now entering its eighth year in existence and continues to offer unique opportunities to those with disabilities. The therapies provided at the riding center are available to both children and adults and the treatable disabilities are decided by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship.
Rising Tide advocates that therapeutic horsemanship may be constructive in terms of physical, emotional, and social development. Riding can be physically demanding in many respects, and the organization tailors the program to each participant through individualized lessons. Additionally, riders learn the values of self discipline, concentration, and teamwork throughout their work with horses and instructors.Participants in Rising Tide’s programs may take part in the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Fair in August, a day in which the community can observe the skills that the students developed through riding.
The essence of Rising Tide’s purpose may be summed up in their slogan “In riding a horse…we borrow freedom.” Executive Director, Kara Thibodeau, elaborated upon the freedom given to Rising Tide’s students through their experiences in the program. “The most poignant part for me is when I see someone that’s in a wheelchair and we get them out of the wheelchair and up on a horse. We take them out on a trail ride; their chair is left in the ring and they’re waving bye to all their friends. That really strikes a note with me. It usually brings a tear to my eye. Here’s somebody that 24/7 is in their chair…I think that’s probably a big moment.”
The opportunities provided by Rising Tide’s programs are only made possible through the donations and support of Island visitors and residents. Interested individuals may seek out their upcoming fundraiser, their Annual Summer Cocktail Party, on Saturday, August 2, 2014, located at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury. The event includes hors d’oeuvres, an oyster bar, stand up comedy, and a silent auction. Alternatively, donations may be made at any point through programs found on their website. Finally, Rising Tide relies upon the work of volunteers who are able to work in the barn or assist in the ring as leaders or side walkers.
