Meals That Are Good for the Soul…and the Wallet

by Robin Harper

A stone’s throw from the watchful gaze of the Old Whaling Church lies another Edgartown landmark, The Edgartown Diner.

Upon crossing its threshold, you leave behind the digital noise of the millennia and step back in time – a place to enjoy a good meal and face-to-face conversation, surrounded by a vintage Americana décor that reminds one of a simpler time.

But make no mistake, this is no ordinary diner. Under the leadership and masterful culinary skills of owner Chef Ralston, it combines the best of both worlds — the feeling of coming home with food that rivals the swankiest of fine dining establishments.

While famous for its all-day breakfast and delicious lunch offerings, the Diner also shines at night. All entrees are under $20, so dinner at the diner is good for the wallet as well as for the soul.

You’ll be greeted by lovely hosts like Mavis who welcome you like an old friend. You’re handed a menu that promises any choice will gain a solid lead on your list of favorites.

Golden oldies playing overhead and trivia cards at your table provide entertainment while you choose which dish will delight your palate tonight.

Jerk Chicken

To begin, whet your appetite with starters like the Coconut Shrimp with sweet chili sauce, or the Mixed Green salad that combines fresh greens with strawberries, goat cheese and walnuts to positively dance with colorful flavor.

For the main course, entrees include the super-tasty Jerk Chicken, marinated in a not-too-spicy seasoning, Thanksgiving Dinner with all the fixings and Blackened Salmon with hollandaise sauce — all served with your choice of two sides: mashed potato, cornbread, chef’s veggies, corn on the cob, jasmine rice or cole slaw.

One can’t-miss entrée is the Southern Fried Chicken – juicy, seasoned to perfection and finger-lickin’ good. You’ll want to pour the accompanying white “gravy” ALL over the plate, especially if cornbread is one of your sides. The mix of salty and sweet is amazing.

Meatloaf Dinner

Another choice that will have you coming back for more is the Meatloaf dinner served with mushroom and onion gravy. It’s hearty, comforting and gives Mom a run for her money (but shhh, we won’t tell her).

In the more casual fare, you’ll find items like Lobster Roll stuffed full of fresh lobster meat smothered in butter, or the Philly Cheese Steak — a tough contender with one that hails from the City of Brotherly Love.

Wash it all down with a cold beer, or if you’re feeling nostalgic, a cherry coke or root beer float will hit the spot.

You’ll leave with bellies full and a renewed fondness for diner dining – a feeling that will sustain you outside this Diner’s walls until the day you can return.
