There’s so much to discover at Simply Soaps
by Brittney Wright
If the smell of fresh citrus, rich fauna, and fragrant musk wafting out of the front door isn’t enough to draw you in, the lure of the original artwork and handcrafted jewelry inside this Vineyard Haven storefront should appeal to any passerby. Simply Soaps offers much more than its name suggests; inside you’ll find a multitude of products as unique as the island itself.
Product: Fragrance Bar Description: There is only one fragrance bar located on the entire island of Martha’s Vineyard, and you’ll find it at Simply Soaps. Indulge your sense of smell by choosing from a huge selection of alcohol-free scents, including many designer-type fragrances. Available in both half ounce and full ounce bottles, starting at $40, you have the full ability to mix fragrances and create your own signature –– talk about a unique afternoon activity!
Product: Gyotaku Paintings by Jeffrey Canha (www.islandfishprints.com) Description: Jeffrey’s paintings adorn the walls of Simply Soaps, and for a good reason –– they are a stunning way to bring a piece of the ocean into your home, without all the sand and salt. Before cameras, the Japanese people used to ink their fish and create a print of it on rice paper as a means to record their catches. Gyotaku, meaning “fish rubbing” in Japanese, has evolved into an art form in the western world; the combination of natural beauty and rich colors creates an image that is both unique and breathtaking.
Product: NMC Originals: Handcrafted Jewelry by Nancy M. Clark (nwmaclarke@gmail.com) Description: After you’ve found your signature scent and splashed some colorful art into your home, it’s worth the extra minute to browse Nancy M. Clark’s completely unique button jewelry –– that’s right, buttons! While many of the pieces in the NMC Originals collection include fine stones and glass beads, it is the buttons that Nancy uses in almost every piece that lend an antique and earthy vibe. Dress up your outfit with a statement necklace, or add a little flare with one of her daintier bracelets. Who said buttons were only meant to hold your coat closed?
Owner Beth Ann Serusa plans to move outside just soaps, starting with the seamless inclusion of handcrafted art. Look out for a fully updated Simply Soaps profile later this season, as we’re just as excited as you are to see what the future holds for this unique boutique!
