The Dust off your hiking shoes, grab the sunscreen and take a hike on one of the many great hiking trails throughout the island. Off the busy streets of Martha’s Vineyard, without the intrusion of honking horns, bike bells and general conversation, all seems and sounds right. The sound is quiet. Yes, quiet has a sound and it is beautiful.
MV is renowned for its natural and unspoiled beauty. Each of the island’s six diverse towns offer their own special spots. Some are off the beaten path, making them even more intriguing. This Week on MV features one suggested trail each issue. For more please visit our interactive map.
For an intriguing beach-themed hiking adventure, head out to the Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge.
The expansive Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge, measuring 516 acres, spans MV’s entire eastern shore. The refuge extends from Wasque Point to the south and all the way northward up to Cape Poge. The best way to reach the reserve is over sand exploration via truck (permit required). However, certain areas are accessible by car and bicycle.
The refuge boasts over 14 miles of hiking trails. Some provide a very good workout and are not for the weekend warrior. Still, all are specially scenic and provide unrivaled views of the Atlantic Ocean or Nantucket Sound. Oversand tours are offered during the island’s summer season. In addition to hiking, the refuge offers fishing, picnicking, swimming, beautiful beaches, hunting and off-roading.
