Over the course of 48 hours, a full blown celebration will occur at Waban Park

Over the course of 48 hours, the serene hiss of crashing waves and light echo of chitter-chatter escalate to a full blown celebration as islanders and tourists of all ages congregate in Oak Bluffs. Waban Park in Oak Bluffs is home to the Vineyard Sound music festival, a jovial tradition that has developed over the years. Children beam with glee as their cheeks are transformed into a kitten or embellished with a blossoming butterfly at the face-painting station. Teens test their hand-eye coordination at the bean-toss stand, and adults enjoy a quenching taste of the rich array of beer and wine distributed from vendor to vendor.
This annual outdoor music festival promises more than just a grand time, however, as its predominant goal revolves around sustainability. In an effort to decrease the usage of plastic during the event, Martha’s Vineyard Sound has partnered with Preserve Products. Preserve Products, a leading maker of recycled household products, will supply most food vendors and booths with recycled #5 polypropylene dishware and utensils. Martha’s Vineyard Sound encourages all participants to come prepared with their own vessels, as refills of water will be provided in an attempt to make this festival a zero-waste event.
A strong sense of community has always flourished throughout the neighboring towns of the Vineyard. The opportunity for non-profit organizations, artisans and local musicians to gather as one is living proof of the island bonds that have developed. “We’re still looking for support,” stresses event producer Phil daRosa. “Whether it’s people buying tickets, artisans interested in featuring their goods, or those hoping to volunteer or donate,” daRosa encourages all to take part in this year’s festival.
If the thought of bobbing your head to live music, savoring a seasonal beer, and moseying from vendor to vendor didn’t win you over, know that your attendance will truly make a difference, and not just to your friends. In fact, Martha’s Vineyard Sound will be partnering with three non-profit organizations this year. $5 from each ticket purchased will go back to the Island Grown Initiative, The Yard, and the Martha’s Vineyard Skatepark (through The Green Room on Main Street Vineyard Haven).
The Jemima James Band, Dana Williams and Beninghof Walton are just a few of the incredibly talented artists awaiting your arrival. Between samples of tasty food and the wide array of musical performances, this year’s festival is sure to create a memorable experience.
The Martha’s Vineyard Sound music festival will officially kickoff when the clock strikes 11 A.M. on July 11, so make sure you don’t oversleep! You won’t want to miss out on the finger-licking and hip-swinging excitement. Advance ticket prices: single day (Saturday or Sunday) – $35 | weekend pass – $60 | all access passes $100/$150.
